ITINs set to expire at the end of 2020
Renewal applications for the Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) for ITINs set to expire at the end of 2020 are now being accepted by the IRS. Taxpayers are being advised to submit these renewals now to avoid a late rush and therefore delays in processing.
This early start is happening now instead of 2020 to allow for a smoother processing of applications.
ITIN Renewal
Under the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, ITINs that have not been used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three consecutive years will expire Dec. 31, 2020, and all ITINs not yet renewed will also expire at the end of the year. Affected taxpayers who expect to file a tax return for 2019 must submit a renewal application.
ITINs with middle digits of 70 to 90 already expired in prior years. Taxpayers with these ITIN numbers can renew at any time.
