Needing an ITIN for a US 1040 tax return?
When filing a US 1040 tax return for the first time, all taxpayers will require a taxpayer identification number. Normally this is a Social Security Number (SSN), but in some cases where you are not a US citizen or resident, you will be required to apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
Where a return is sent in without a number, the IRS will assign a temporary taxpayer identification number called an IRSN (Internal Revenue Service Number). This is not an ITIN, but just a number that is assigned to log the tax return in the IRS system. This number will not allow the processing of a refund or assignment of credits and an ITIN will need to be applied for to finalize the processing of the US 1040 tax return.
Can I apply for an ITIN from the United Kingdom?
Yes, as a Certifying Acceptance Agent, Just Breve are able to certify your original identity documents and complete a certificate of accuracy (COA) to attach to the application. This ensures you do not have to send off your foreign passport or foreign identity documents to the US.
Where are you based?
Just Breve are based in Hayes, West London (near the M4 and Heathrow airport). You can visit us (by appointment) at our office in Stockley Park or if you are short of time, we can arrange to visit you at a convenient location (home/office/elsewhere).
What is the process to obtain an ITIN?
The process is straight forward and we will complete the following:
1. Completion of Form W-7 Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
2. Perform checks of your identity document (passport or other foreign documents)
3. Perform checks of any supporting documents (e.g. your 1040 tax return being available to attach to the application)
4. Completion of Form W-7COA - to certify your foreign identity documents
5. Mailing of documents to the ITIN unit
6. We also provide a follow up service - if you require your ITIN sooner - e.g. to pay any tax due to the IRS. We can call them after 6 weeks to obtain the number by phone.
7. ITIN receipt - we receive a copy and you receive your copy of the ITIN assignment notice. We will always advise once we have received our copy, sop you are aware yours is on it's way.
What are the standard timescales for obtaining an ITIN?
All ITINs take 7 to 11 weeks to be received by mail from the US after we have sent them. Some months (e.g. Jan to April and October) are busier than normal, so ITINs during this time may tax longer to process due to high volumes around tax filing season in the US.
As above, we call the ITIN unit to obtain a verbal confirmation if you require the ITIN sooner (e.g. to pay tax due).
Do you guarantee that I will receive an ITIN?
We only take on clients that we know are eligible for an ITIN. So if we agree to assist we will ensure your ITIN is received. Our job is to ensure the application is complete and all applicable supporting documents are attached.
All supporting documents are supplied by the applicant. Where these are not available we do our best to liaise with any US agents to aid you obtaining them.
We only charge a one off fee. If the ITIN is rejected for any reason (e.g. processing errors or lost in the mail), we will continue to assist until received at no extra cost to you.
