What is an ITIN?
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or ITIN is a tax number issued by the IRS primarily for filing a US tax return or is issued in limited exceptions to not filing a tax return. Please note, if you have ever had a Social Security Number (SSN), this is valid for life and you will not be able to apply for an ITIN (you cannot have both).
How do I apply for an ITIN with the Internal Revenue Service?
Using Form W-7 you will be able to apply for the number. However ALL applications require either a US tax return (Federal Form 1040 or 1040NR) attached or fixed supporting documents as determined by the IRS. If these are not attached, the ITIN will reject.
All applications also require a certified copy of your identity documents or the ORIGINALS submitted with the application. This is where Just Breve can assist. What sort of timeline will my application be processed in?
ITINs are normally processed in 7 to 11 weeks. However, due to Covid-19 you are looking at 3 months minimum. The IRS has ongoing processing delays across all units.
Once I receive my ITIN - is it valid forever?
The rules changed in 2015 - ITINs expire if not used for 3 years on a US tax return. They are however still valid for reporting purposes.
The primary purpose of an ITIN is tax filing.
