If you obtained an ITIN and since receiving it have either married or changed your name by deed poll, you should notify the ITIN unit by writing to them to update your details. Doing so now will save problems later down the line if filing a US tax return (1040NR or 1040) or if having to renew your ITIN if you haven't filed for 3 consecutive years.
How do I change my name on my ITIN if I married?
If married, it is best to send a cover letter explaining the name change and ensuring you list your ITIN, date of birth, the old ITIN name and your new name. To prove the change you will need to include a copy of your marriage certificate (and if you have your old or new passport copies, enclose this too for completeness).
How do I change my name on my ITIN if I changed my name by deed poll or legally via the courts (non marriage)?
As above, it is best to write a cover letter explaining the name change and ensuring you list your ITIN, date of birth, the old ITIN name and your new name. To prove the name change you will need to include a copy of the deed poll or name change certificate (and include old and new copies of any passport as above, for completeness).
Where do I send the paperwork for the ITIN name change?
You should send everything to the following address:
Internal Revenue Service
ITIN Operations
Mail Stop 6090-AUSC
3651 S. Interregional Hwy 35
Austin, TX 78741
Once processed, they will post a new CP565 notice to you with the new name listed. The ITIN remains the same number.
I need to renew my ITIN but my name has changed. Should I do the above first?
No is the answer. The reason is the ITIN unit has 4 to 5 month delays in processing (as at February 2022). Therefore each time you contact them it will take that timescale to process. It is best to renew with the new identity document listing your name (ideally a passport) and enclose the name change explanation and supporting paperwork with the renewal.
Can Just Breve assist with applying for an ITIN?
Yes, as a certifying acceptance agent (CAA), we are licensed with the IRS to assist with both new and renewal ITIN applications. As CAA, we would prepare all paperwork as well as certify your identity documents, so no originals need to be sent to the ITIN unit (this is for a Form W-7 only, not for a sole name change).
