What is a certified acceptance agent (CAA)?
A certified acceptance agent is qualified in preparing and certifying US taxpayer identification numbers for individuals (ITIN).
A CAA does not issue the ITIN, that is the job of the ITIN unit at the IRS.
A CAA knows what individuals are eligible for an ITIN and what criteria need to be met to be issued a number. ITINs are issued primarily for filing a US tax return and also in limited exceptions to filing a tax return. With all applications, supporting documents need to be attached, else the ITIN application will reject.
CAA's are also authorised to check and verify identity documents and sign a separate certification document called a W-7COA (Certificate of Accuracy).
